How to prevent squirrels from getting into my attic

How to prevent squirrels from getting into my attic?

Squirrel infestations in attic can be a big deal. If you have a problem in Oakville, Ontario, you can call our  professional wildlife removal company. If you want to avoid calling a squirrel removal service, however, you must prevent the intrusion of these animals into the attic of a house, but how can you do it? There are three main methods: keeping the trees under control, controlling your home and using repellents.

The first thing to do is to check your garden and the trees inside. Any tree that reaches up to six or eight feet, the throwing distance of the squirrels, from your home should be checked. The easiest thing to do is to cut the branches, but what to do if you can’t cut them? If the trees are closer? Simple, you have to prevent the squirrels from climbing trees and, from there, get to the roof of your home. To do this is very simple: take a metal band at least 2 feet high and tie it around the trees at least 7 feet high. This way the squirrel cannot climb the tree because of the sheet metal, placed high enough to prevent the squirrel from avoiding it with a jump.

Secondly, you need to check your home and seal the entrances. Start checking the outside of your home looking for passages or holes through which the squirrels could enter (even smaller than you imagine) or places where the wood has rotted, making it easy for a squirrel to destroy and enter it. The same applies to the interior. In the specific case of the attic, look for places where the wood is rotten, weak and prone to damage caused by squirrels, or places where natural light enters. If the light comes in, it means there are holes that squirrels can go through. Once checked for possible entries, seal them: close the holes, seal the joints of the roof, replace the rotten wood, put a steel cap on chimney etc.

Lastly, you can use different types of repellents for squirrels, even combining them to maximize the effects:

  • If you have squirrels already in the house, or have a doubt about it, you can use a cloth soaked in ammonia. The stench of the substance will cause the squirrels to flee, if any, or prevent them from nesting. If you don’t have ammonia you can also use other types of very strong detergents.
  • You can also use “technical” methods like noises or lights. Leave the lights on or install temporary light. Strong light will make the attic unattractive for squirrels. The same goes for noises. You can use annoying noises or set up a radio so that the attic is filled with human voices and pushes the squirrels and not enter or leave.
  • A quick and easy option is used a commercial squirrel repellent, natural or chemical squirrels. The natural ones used the smell of predators’ urine, so as to scare the squirrels. Spray them near any entry holes and make sure to use the repellent as indicated on the label.

In any case, if you have any doubts about the success of a DIY squirrels prevent, you can call our professional wildlife removal service. Professionals can help you not only eliminate squirrels from your home or attic, but also to keep them away.
